Game Day: SC State Girls Soccer

SC State Girls Soccer vs. Wofford

Moving from High School and lower grade levels to college was a fun and exciting jump! There’s more rules and regulations when photographing college sports, but when it comes down to it, it is all the same once I’m standing behind the camera.

We rented a Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 lens from for the game. We’ve been looking at getting a longer piece of glass, and this was a front runner, and in the budget. After an hour or longer rain delay, it cleared out to be a beautiful evening at the Wofford campus. I set up a remote camera close to the SC State goal, allowing me to capture photos from the other side of the field by pressing the remote button. It’s a spray and pray type of photography, but I did end up getting a few frames worth keeping. Glad I did this.

The Sigma 120-300mm 2.8 was a decent lens, but it did struggle to grab a quick focus. I missed several shots due to the focus system being too slow, but still managed to get a lot of very good shots. Photographing soccer is so different than football. It seemed like everytime I moved on the field, the action moved to where I just was! I kept at it, and the action finally did come close to me, and it was awesome. I’m looking forward to the next game!
